HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ASKED TO TELL "YOUR STORY" BUT DIDN'T FEEL YOU WERE RESPECTED AND EMPOWERED AS AN EXPERT? WE BELIEVE THAT LIVED EXPERIENCE IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF EXPERTISE AND YOU SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE CREATIVE CONTROL, OWNERSHIP OF YOUR STORY AND BE PAID FOR YOUR EXPERTISE.
If this sounds and feels familiar this could be the workshop for you.
We are running our first in-person interactive workshop in Boorloo/Perth and invite Story Holders (people with lived experiences) who are asked to share stories at events, for research and consultation and beyond...basically anywhere there is often an expectation to share stories of damage.
Our work is guided by our Transformational Ethical Story Telling (T.E.S.T.) framework and is a tool which, in addition to our Story Holder guide, can work towards ensuring you understand your legal rights and how you can better advocate for the control of your stories and those of your community.
We are working towards flipping the power of storytelling where Story Holders lead storytelling and organisations are guided by Story Holders, rather than the other way around.
Workshop Participant Quotes
“I am not used to studying the subject as I am always seen to be the subject. By participating in Our Race workshops I feel more confident to navigate this space and control my own narrative, and tell my story, my way.”
"I didn't realise we even had the option to push back and take control of our stories and tell them (or not) in the way we want to. Having a framework provides a tangible way to do this."
"This workshop really made me think of informed consent more holistically and how often I have signed a consent form without realising how much I signed over. I love the idea of shifting from transactional consent to relational. That is the way it should be ALWAYS!"
Cost
These programs are always free of charge for Story Holders as we believe it is the responsibility of organisations working with Story Holders to resource the communities they work with. If you are not part of an organisation you are able to buy a Pay What You Can/Feel Ticket or an Our Race Community Story Holder funded ticket free of charge.
For organisations who have staff, advisory groups and/or community members you invite to share stories and/or inform your policies, processes or practices this workshop, buying tickets for community is a great way to invest in supporting safe, ethical storytelling.
We encourage organisations to pay for these workshops so that we can continue to develop free Story Holder resources and deliver Story Holder training and workshops at not cost to the Story Holders.
As a Charity with DGR Status you can also make a tax-deductible donation which goes towards our Story Holder Fund*.
* Our Story Holder Fund is a fund set aside for Artists and Storytellers of Colour who perform at our events where no other funding is available. We are committed to centring and amplifying voices of those who have been historically excluded and ensuring their craft and artistry are respected and honoured, including being paid fairly.
